Finding lost Iphone Indoors using Wifi Triangulation
Story: Recently a friend of mine had their phone stolen. They were able to
track the phone (and lock it) using the "Find My Iphone" features, to a
nearby motel and alerted the police. This however did not help much,
because the location determined kept switching between the building and
the street nearby, not giving an exact location. Also I'm pretty sure the
app fails to state altitude of the device, leaving the question of which
floor.. This is obviously because of the phone being indoors, in turn
leaving it unable to be pinpointed by the GPS. Also, a motel has several
floors and rooms, making the chances of retrieval slim to none. Legal
issues regarding retrieval aside...
Objective: Find exact location of stolen phone..(room etc) My theory is
that there must be a way to locate the stolen Iphones exact position when
GPS fails to by using other Iphones at a close range (wifi range).
Possibly including activating a mobile hotspot (or something to give the
other phones something search for) on the stolen phone remotely, then
using multiple friends Iphones as points of reference for the
triangulation.
Question: Is it possible to find the exact location (or close enough to
retrieve) of the stolen Iphone using a method like this? If not, how else?
Thanks
